Shortly after midnight on October 7, 1998, 21-year-old Matthew Shepard met Aaron James McKinney and Russell Arthur Henderson in a bar.
McKinney and Henderson posed as gay men and offered Shepard a ride in their car. Subsequently, Shepard was robbed, pistol whipped, tortured, tied to a fence in a remote, rural area, and left to die.
McKinney and Henderson also found out his address and intended to burgle his home. Still tied to the fence, Shepard was discovered eighteen hours later by a cyclist, who at first thought that Shepard was a scarecrow. At the time of discovery, Shepard was still alive, but in a coma.
Shepard suffered a fracture from the back of his head to the front of his right ear. He had severe brain stem damage, which affected his body's ability to regulate heart rate, body temperature and other vital signs.
There were also about a dozen small lacerations around his head, face and neck. His injuries were deemed too severe for doctors to operate. Shepard never regained consciousness and remained on full life support. As he lay in intensive care, candlelight vigils were held by the people of Laramie.
He was pronounced dead at 12:53 A.M. on October 12, 1998 at Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins. Police arrested McKinney and Henderson shortly thereafter, finding the bloody gun as well as the victim's shoes and wallet in their truck.
Henderson pleaded guilty on April 5, 1999, and agreed to testify against McKinney to avoid the death penalty; he received two consecutive life sentences. The jury in McKinney's trial found him guilty of felony murder. As it began to deliberate on the death penalty, Shepard's parents brokered a deal, resulting in McKinney receiving two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole.

In the meanwhile, today at work I had a conference call with my developers in India, in the middle of the conference call my mobile rang...
A phone number from Venezuela...
I didn't recognized the number, however I thought my parents were calling... I just rejected the call since I was busy. I thought they will call later.
The mobile phone rang again.
Same number.
Something important I thought. They are not calling from home and they called right away again, they never do that.
We have a special code for phone calls within my family.
I apologized to the Project Manager in India and picked up the phone.
- Alo?
Male voice answers: This may not be the phone call you have been waiting for... (etc, etc, that I don't remember, I was confused... But I definitely remember that part)
- Who is this? I am sorry, I am busy now... Have people from India in the other line...
- Don't worry, I will call you later...
- Who is it?
- Call you later...
Hang up...
Obviously, the "call you later" part never happened.
I fought my anger, my disappointment, my deception.
I won the battle!
We talked.

Today is Sunday. The mood is content. The topic is love. Or rather, fall in love...
If the question is: have you fallen in love? Some people will say yes. Some will say not yet. And some will say that it happens everyday.
Another question would be: why fall in love? Why fall? Is it because when you love someone it always happens accidentally, just as if you fell? Unexpectedly. Unnoticed. Got you there just like that. It might hurt. It might not.
Most people agrees with the term "fall in love". Or take it for granted just the way it is. Yet, the word fall itself means inability, downfall, or weakness.
I might say differently. I might start with the reaction which we made after we fell. We rise. We ascend. We get up.
I reckoned that it is what we should do when we fall in love. We rise. We ascend. And start build our love. Do not just fall and stay there silently. Obediently. It will make us weak. Unable.
Often love makes us unable and weak. Irrational and mindless. It is not the way we deal with love. Love means happiness. Happiness creates joy. Joy creates power. Power creates ability. With ability you achieve your dreams. Dreams makes you humble. Humbleness creates compassion. Compassion creates awareness. Awareness to support people that you love. Love makes you content. Content makes you strong.
